Neuropsychology Fellowship

Overview

A post-doctoral neuropsychology fellowship is available at the Boston University Alzheimer’s Disease Center (BU ADC) in the Department of Neurology. The fellowship program provides specialized training in aging and Alzheimer's diseas and is intended for a neuropsychologist who wishes to develop an academic career in clinical research. The position is for one year and can be renewed for up to two additional years.

Fellows are part of the NIA-funded BU ADC, where research and clinical mentorship is supported through a dynamic and highly collaborative interdisciplinary unit of over 30 faculty and staff members. The fellow will be involved in an active and well-funded clinical research program emphasizing vascular cognitive aging, including:

  1. a prospective study examining cardiac function in relation to neuroimaging and cognitive markers of maladaptive brain aging;
  2. a prospective study of hemodynamic changes associated with cardiac surgery; and
  3. retrospective studies examining vascular risk factors for cognitive decline and dementia based on the existing databases affiliated with the NIA-funded BU ADC.

Fellows participate in research studies through data collection, data analysis, authoring of manuscripts, and grant development. Several intramural pilot funding sources are available to support the fellow's development of an independent research project.

Clinical training is provided in the context of a multidisciplinary outpatient clinic with referrals focused on general medical neuropsychology issues (e.g., multiple sclerosis, epilepsy) as well as geriatric neuropsychology referral questions (e.g., memory loss, stroke). Emphasis is on the refinement of clinical expertise including clinical interviewing, neuropsychological assessment, case conceptualization, and individualized treatment planning.

Robust didactics are provided to augment the fellows’ training, including Neurology Grand Rounds, case conferences, ADC Lecture Series, grant writing workshops, and numerous professional development series.

Stipends are competitive, and benefits include health insurance, dental insurance, Boston University tuition remission, and a modest travel stipend. Anticipated start dates fall between July 1 and September 1, 2010. This position conforms to the Houston Conference guidelines to fulfill requirements for ABPP board certification eligibility in clinical neuropsychology with the expectation that clinical activities, including patient assessments, will encompass 50% of the fellowship.

This fellowship position is not part of the APPCN matching program.
