"This most dreadful pest of humanity," yellow fever, became an epidemic in the late 1800s in America. Other diseases also challenged the medical profession at that time -- influenza, the plague, smallpox, scarlet fever, typhus, and polio. Hospital beds quickly filled, so tents, such as these outside Boston City Hospital, were often erected outdoors. The hospital, which opened its doors in 1864, has had a long, close association with Boston University's School of Medicine. By 1912, of 111 physicians on the hospital staff and in the outpatient department, 93 had graduated from MED. In 1973, MED was granted sole responsibility for professional staffing of the hospital.
