Associate Professor (Theatre Management)
Has served as the Huntington Theatre Company's Managing Director since 1982, overseeing all fiscal and administrative operations. Locally, Michael serves as Chairman of the Cultural and Scientific Directors Group and as a member of the Board of Directors of ArtsBoston and of the Massachusetts Advocates for the Arts, Sciences and Humanities (MAASH). Previously, he served as a member of the Board of Directors and Treasurer for StageSource, the service organization for Boston-area theatre, and as Program Consultant for the Arts Leadership Initiative of Business Volunteers for the Arts. Beyond Boston, he is a member of the Board of Directors of Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national service organization for not-for-profit theatre, and is President of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT), for which he previously served as Vice President, Secretary, and a member of the Negotiating Committee for seven national collective bargaining agreements, including terms as Chairman and Co-Chairman, respectively, of LORT's 1989 and 1993 negotiations with the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. He has also served as a site visitor, panelist, and panel chairman for the National Endowment for the Arts. Prior to coming to the Huntington, Michael spent three seasons as the Managing Director of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. He has also been the General Manager of New York's Roundabout Theatre Company, Business Manager for PAF Playhouse on Long Island, and an independent arts management consultant based in Taos, New Mexico.
