Requests to Add Insurance After the (September 30) Open Enrollment Deadline :

If you experience a significant life change that directly affects your insurance coverage, you may petition to enroll in the Boston University student medical insurance plan after the open enrollment period has ended.

You must submit a written request for insurance coverage along with acceptable proof of the loss of your insurance coverage (e.g., confirmation of insurance termination on employer or insurance company letterhead) to Student Accounting Services, 881 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02215-1390. Requests may also be faxed to Student Accounting Services at 617-353-3313.

Requests that do not include appropriate supporting documentation will not be considered for review. The supporting documentation must specify the exact date of the insurance termination.

NOTE: All Graduate School of Dentistry students, Professional Medical Students, M.D. candidates, and Dermatology Students may only enroll at the Student Plus level.

For all other students, please specify in your request if you wish to enroll at the Student Complete level or Student Plus level. If no level is specified, and if your request is approved, you will be added at the Student Complete level.

Effective Date:

Loss of coverage within past thirty-one days:

If the request to add Insurance, along with valid supporting documentation, is received by Student Accounting Services no more than thirty-one days after the loss of alternative insurance coverage; the student medical insurance coverage, if approved, will become effective from the date that the prior coverage terminated and continue to the end of the insurance policy period. If approved, the premium will be pro-rated based on the month during which coverage begins.

** Students cannot self-select the start date for insurance.

Loss of coverage more than thirty-one days ago:

If the request to add Insurance, along with valid supporting documentation, is received by Student Accounting Services MORE than thirty-one days after the loss of alternative insurance coverage; the student medical insurance coverage, if approved, will become effective from the day after the request plus valid supporting documentation is received and continue to the end of the insurance policy period. If approved, the premium will be pro-rated based on the month during which coverage begins.

** Students cannot self-select the start date for insurance.

Final approval is contingent upon the approval of Aetna Student Health.
