Community
BU Dining Services not only focuses on taking care of our guests, we also do our part to contribute to the larger community around us. Each year, Dining Services partners with the Community Service Center to conduct fundraising and educational "student fast" programs. Traditionally, the fast is comprised of students volunteering to skip two residence hall meals on the same day so the cost savings can be contributed to a worthy cause. One fundraiser is held in each of the fall and spring semesters. Over the years contributions have been made to Oxfam America, American Red Cross, Tsunami Relief, Habitat for Humanity and the Community Service Center’s “Food for Food”.
Our longest individual relationship has been with Oxfam America. Annual cash contributions have been made since 1982. This year’s Oxfam fundraiser, Fast for World Hunger, will occur sometime during the week of October 22 -26. Last year we enrolled the highest number of student participants, 2,314, for the Oxfam fundraiser. Let's work together to surpass that number!
The second fundraiser for this academic year will be for the Community Service Center's “Food for Food” and it is tentatively scheduled for April. The Food for Food fundraiser benefited from the highest number of student participants, 3,901, for any student fast program. This occurred in 2002, so it is time to set a new record!
Dining Services also partners with the US Marine Corps to help collect gifts for the “Toys for Tots” program. Each year between Thanksgiving and intersession, Dining Services sets up large donation bins in both The Union Court at the George Sherman Union and in Starbucks at the School of Management. All members of the BU community are encouraged to bring in new unwrapped toys (non-violent) to be distributed to needy children in the community.
