The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GRS) is committed to the advancement of knowledge through research, scholarship, and publication, and the preparation of future researchers, scholars, and college and university teachers. The School offers a broad range of M.A. and Ph.D. programs in nearly 50 fields of the humanities, natural and social sciences, computer and mathematical sciences, theology, and music.

GRS at a Glance

Graduate enrollment, Fall 2004: 1,967

The faculty of the Graduate School includes all members of the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences, faculty from the School of Theology (in the Division of Religious and Theological Studies), faculty from the Music Division in the School for the Arts, faculty from the College of Engineering (in the Bioinformatics Program), and faculty from other BU Schools and Colleges appointed in specific programs.

Boston University’s first graduate degrees were granted in 1877: the M.A. to Isaac Newton Lewis and the Ph.D. to James Barclay Hall and Helen Magill (later Mrs. Andrew Dickson White, diplomat, scholar, and first president of Cornell University).

Boston University, through GRS, was the first university in America to confer the Ph.D. on a woman.

GRS students pursue degrees in nearly 50 major fields.
