News Story

Welcome

The role of the Office of Human Resources is to design, develop, and implement a comprehensive human resources program to serve the University community and attract, reward and retain high quality faculty and staff. The office provides services to prospective, current, and retired University
employees. Working closely with department administrators, the Office of Human Resources is
committed to delivering programs and services that make Boston University an employer of
choice.

The office is divided into six sections: Employment and Training, Employee Relations and Labor Relations, Compensation, Benefits, Operations and Systems, and Equal Opportunity.

  • The Employment and Training section recruits clerical, maintenance, and entry-level professional candidates. Ongoing professional growth and procedural workshop training for faculty and staff is also conducted by this section.
  • The Employee Relations and Labor Relations section advises supervisory personnel on the interpretation of University labor agreements, policies, and procedures. Employee Relations Representatives assist University departments in meeting their staffing goals and managing job performance. This section also acts as advisors to employees and supervisors to resolve conflicts, promote effective working relationships, and provide guidance regarding career advancement. Additionally, this section assists with the recruitment of middle and senior level professional candidates.
  • The Compensation section monitors compensation policies and practices within the University. Through comprehensive salary surveys for the University and for individual departments, management is advised on issues related to salary competitiveness.
  • The Benefits section administers the University’s benefits—health and dental insurance, short and long-term disability plans, retirement plans, the life insurance program, tuition remission program, and long-term care plan, and oversees expenditures in these areas. The Benefits section also analyzes, plans, and implements changes to benefits plans to ensure effective delivery to employees.
  • The Systems and Operations section provides technical support that includes mainframe programming, database management, network and desktop support. This section is responsible for the maintenance of employee records (manually and electronically), the ongoing development and maintenance of human resources information systems and the Human Resources website, the ongoing support of special projects that require technical support, and federal, state, and management reporting requirements.
  • The Equal Opportunity section is responsible for ensuring that the University is in compliance with state and federal laws, rules, and regulations governing equal opportunity. In consultation with the General Counsel’s Office, the Director of Equal Opportunity investigates complaints and provides training on the University’s Sexual Harassment Policy and equal opportunity issues.

The Office of Human Resources is also responsible for negotiating collective bargaining agreements, settling grievances and arbitrations, and maintaining management/union relationships for the five unions representing different groups at the University.
