At BU Law we believe a great deal of learning happens outside the classroom — we encourage students to enjoy their legal studies, to expand intellectually and personally and to participate in student organizations, extracurricular activities, community service and other activities that enrich student life.

Student Groups and Organizations

Pursue your individual interests outside of class by joining one of more than 30 interest-centered student groups and organizations, six student-run scholarly journals or volunteering at area legal service organizations, such as Shelter Legal Services. LL.M. students are invited to join any of BU Law’s student organizations.

Academic Events

Faculty "brown bag lunches" feature guest speakers who discuss cutting-edge legal topics like stem cell research in Jewish Law, issues surrounding gay marriage and the politics of national security in an age of novel threats. Graduate student activities include a Law and Economics Seminar, LL.M. Discovery Series and the LL.M. Colloquium: Topics in American Law.

Community Service

We work with students to foster a commitment to public and professional service. Part of first-year J.D. orientation is a voluntary community service day, where new students can sign up to join current students in projects like Habitat for Humanity. During law school, students can participate in our voluntary Pro Bono Program, which involves working in organizations dedicated to underrepresented groups and or social issues.

Work Hard, Play Hard

Opportunities for BU Law students include first-year section parties, coffee houses, Student Appreciation Days, holiday parties, pot-luck dinners, ski trips, social hours and an annual auction. A dynamic variety of social and athletic activities– yoga classes in the law tower, intramural hockey, ultimate Frisbee, ballroom dancing and the new "Live Well, Learn Well" program– are just a few of the many activities that help make BU Law a true community.

Additionally, the offices of the graduate programs organize frequent receptions and gatherings where LL.M.s interact with one other and the J.D. community. Together, they explore Boston and New England–from hiking in New Hampshire, to Boston’s Fenway Park.

Legal Follies is the School of Law's annual variety show. It's written, performed and produced by law students and reminds the BU Law community about the humorous side of law school and their chosen profession.
