The College of General Studies (CGS) represents the first step toward earning a Boston University undergraduate degree. CGS’s innovative and rigorous two-year core curriculum provides a strong liberal arts foundation for the bachelor’s degree.

The 14-course curriculum of the freshman and sophomore years prepares students for success in an increasingly cross-disciplinary world. Together with a group of classmates—and a faculty team that represents the humanities, rhetoric, social sciences, and sciences—students explore new intellectual terrain. Students also fulfill the general education requirements for most of the University’s undergraduate schools and colleges before entering junior year at Boston University in one of its more than 250 programs of study.
