Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research

Boston University Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, which offers undergraduate, Master's and Doctoral degrees in the Health and Rehabilitation Sciences invites applications for the senior administrative and faculty position of Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research.

Sargent College, one of 17 schools and colleges that make up Boston University, consists of four academic departments: Health Sciences, Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, Physical Therapy and Athletic Training, and Occupational Therapy and Rehabilitation Counseling. In addition, Sargent College operates Centers in Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Neurorehabilitation, an Institute of Human Resiliency, and an outpatient rehabilitation services practice. College faculty are also affiliated with the BU Hearing Research Center . Boston University has a Medical School and a new Neuroimaging Center.

Sargent College is a leader in extramural research within the health and rehabilitation sciences with approximately $6 million in awards in 2006. This diverse college of 60 full-time and over 40 part-time members has as one of its highest strategic priorities for the college to foster growth and expansion of its faculty's sponsored research.

The Associate Dean for Research will assume a twelve-month joint administrative/faculty position and report directly to the Dean of Sargent College. Major responsibilities include the following: 1) work with the administration and faculty to further develop and implement strategic plans for expanding the quality and quantity of the faculty's sponsored research and graduate research programs; 2) work with the individual departments and faculty to refine research agendas, develop proposals, and identify promising sources of funding, 3) oversee faculty development and the college's strategic investments to stimulate and expand it's research programs, 4) oversee the college's research colloquia and interdisciplinary seminars, and 5) report on and work to publicize the college's research activities, and 6) conduct one's own funded program of research and scholarship.

Qualifications include:

  • An earned doctorate (Ph.D., Sc.D., M.D. or equivalent) with a strong background in health and rehabilitation sciences
  • Academic credentials commensurate with a faculty appointment as Associate Professor or Professor in an appropriate Sargent academic department
  • Demonstrated excellence as a researcher, a strong record of sponsored research and current research funding
  • Administrative expertise and experience in mentoring new researchers
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work with diverse disciplines or groups
