Studies

Study Focus

We are currently looking for 4 and 5 year-old children to participate in basic research studies aimed at exploring the underlying causes of language difficulties. The project will involve both children with language impairments and children acquiring language normally.

These studies will have no direct benefit to you or your child, but may help us understand the nature of language disorders.  By getting a handle on the disorder early on, we hope to be able to provide better and earlier interventions.

What does it involve?

Each child who participates will take part in 2-3 sessions conducted at the Speech Lab at Boston University. The sessions last about 1½ - 2 hours, scheduled at the family’s convenience.
The Speech Lab is located on Commonwealth Ave. on the BU Charles River Campus. The building is accessible by T or by car, with parking provided.
The sessions include many different activities, structured as games. Most children find that participating in the study is interesting and fun. Children receive rewards and a small gift for participating.

Who can participate?

Children with suspected language impairments and children developing typically are invited to participate.  Children with suspected language impairments usually say their first words later than usual, and may have problems speaking clearly.
All children should meet the following criteria:

  • Native English speaking children who aren’t hearing any other languages in the home.
  • Normal cognitive abilities/ non-verbal intelligence
  • Normal social/ emotional development
  • Normal hearing, reasonably intelligible articulation
  • No history of neurological or genetic disorder, such as ADHD, autism, or Down Syndrome.
