Campus expands wireless access in dorms

Got wireless? If you live on campus, chances are you do now. An expansion project completed last week has equipped almost every campus residence common area with wireless network access.

According to Michael Krugman, interim vice president of information systems and technology, the University has provided wireless access to lounges and laundry and recreation rooms all around campus. 

The project was born when a group of students approached President Robert A. Brown with a modest request for access in a few specific locations. The president sanctioned a much more substantial project, involving 51 common areas in 15 residences.

The new wireless service will be secure and encrypted, as it was in the past, but will incorporate new protocol making it easier to connect to the Web. Previously, software was needed to connect to the network through virtual personal network, or VPN, technology. The new system requires only a valid, synchronized Kerberos password to log in. Students, faculty, and staff can click here to make sure their Kerberos password is synchronized with BU’s Active Directory.

While the wireless network access is specifically targeted at residence common areas, Krugman expects hundreds of residents to benefit, since radio transceivers typically radiate beyond targeted service areas.
