Residence Life

Hey-

This week I had a meeting with Dean Zamojski about a whole bunch of ResLife issues.  We talked about condoms in the dorms.  He would love to see some statistics about how much use these are getting.  Our Committee is going to be gathering this information so we can present it to him at the beginning of next semester.

I also presented a quiet hours comparison that had information from a bunch of area colleges.  He said he was going to look into them.  He knows they need to be adjusted- they’ve been like that for ages!

We discussed the recent bedbug issues that were found in 575 (the HOJO).  It was his biggest challenge in October, but they Office of Residence Life has created a detailed protocol to follow if we have the unfortunate event of experiencing this again.

In regards in Facilities Management, he is going to have of of his staff members talk to them about entering resident’s rooms.  Dean Zamojoski understands residents concerns when it come to privacy.  He also gave me contact information so I can talk to them about adding a comment section to their website.

He also wanted me to tell you all the Residence Assistant application are available on the Residence Life website- check it out!  www.bu.edu/reslife

I think that’s it- I’ll be coming back with more info later!!

City Affairs Update- January Panel Events

Hey Everyone,

I had a meeting with Kat from DOS and we finalized some basics for the panel events in January. In addition to hosting a panel with city officials on how to better engage and integrate BU students in the communities that surround us, there is going to be a panel on jury duty. Both events will run in the same week, one on tuesday and the other on Thursday.  Currently, we are considering the week of January 26th for the events but ultimately it depends on when rooms on campus are available.  I am working on reserving rooms and the invitations to be sent out.

I am hoping to have 2 panel events each month as a part of “City Affairs Week”. For January the theme is getting to know your community/city. For February i was planning on having a panel discussion on homelessness in the Boston area. I am still brainstorming on the second event that will run alongside the homelessness panel.
If anyone has any ideas for panel events, questions, or comments please email me at pbachani@bu.edu.

Cheers,

Pooja

Academic Affairs Update 11/11/08

Hey Everyone!

Academic Affairs Committee had a small but vital meeting on 11/05. Here are the minutes:

  • Library and RCL Hours - We reserved a table for next week to table for expanded library and residential computer lab hours. Petitioning has been going well, and we have several filled sheets. Please stop by our link table Mon-Thursday this week to sign the petitions!
  • Ebooks - We worked on a survey that will go out to all professors regarding ebooks.
  • Major Checklists - Members are continuing to work on aggregating majors checklists to go up on the Academic Affairs webpage.

Finally, Academic Affairs will be starting this week a Major Spotlight blog that will go up each week with a short discription and a related checklist for that major. This will hopefully broaden community knowledge about interesting majors and classes. If you would be interested in seeing a specific major in the spotlight, let us know at academicaffairs@bustudentunion.com

Also, if you are interested you should check out our next meeting in the GSU Backcourt on Wednesday November 11 at 7:45. Have a say in the Academic and Advising situation of Boston University!

The Greening of Dining Services

BU Dining services has recently hired a sustainability coordinator and they are doing a phenomenal job with sustainability.

Here are just a few of the changes that have been made:

-       Composting in the back of the house

-       Compostable service wear (utensils, take out containers, etc)

-       More local food

-       Recycling

Some of the projects in the works:

-        Increasing composting and recycling

-       Testing and using eco-friendly cleaning supplies

-       Creating more signage for changes to educate BU community

Some of their future projects include:

-       Greening the dining vehicles

-       Making operations more energy efficient (buying energy efficient appliances, etc)

-       Expanding recycling waste oil

Dining Services is making an extraordinary effort to make its operations sustainable as well as educating students on the issues that they are working on. The hope is that the BU community recognizes their achievements as a new way of doing things at BU. Sustainability needs to be major priority for the university and dining services is leading the way.

We thank BU dining services for taking the initiative to work on these issues!

Executive Staff Update

Success!

The “Chalk About the Issues” event was big accomplishment. We had over 70 participants and almost 100 ft of paper was chalked. Students overcame their fun Halloween “adventures” to come out and show their political prowess. Some of the issues that BU students find most important regarding the election TOMORROW are the environment, the failing economy, especially tuition costs, education, women’s rights, gay rights, and animal rights. The complete works will be displayed in the GSU tomorrow.

K thanks bye,

Executive Staff
