J. Craig Venter’s speech at BU’s 2004 Commencement featured a list of his “rules for living” — a bit surprising for a scientist and entrepreneur with a reputation as a rule breaker and a risk taker.

Addressing a class of “new global citizens.” In her Commencement speech, student speaker Julie Macé (CAS’04) contrasted her generation, which she believes “has redefined ‘community’ to be more global in nature” with previous generations, who “could more easily focus on a local community and become deeply engaged in it.” She described her fellow graduates as “modern nomads — exposed daily to a sensory overload of sound bites, ideas, and images, yet able to adapt to exponential change in ways that previous generations sometimes could not. We travel more often and farther away, reaching for new and deeper ways of understanding our local, national, and international surroundings.” She views BU as a “place where there are no fixed boundaries between the campus and city” and which helped develop “the open minds and the tolerance necessary for being part of a large, diverse, and at times hectic global culture.” Macé, who majored in international relations and graduated summa cum laude, has traveled extensively. She hopes to explore South America after graduation and eventually attend graduate school in Europe. Photo by Albert L’Étoile

Boston University Medeiros scholarships were recently awarded to 14 graduating students from Boston archdiocesan high schools. The four-year full-tuition scholarships are part of the University’s Cardinal Humberto Medeiros Scholarship Program, established in 1986, which honors students for their academic achievement, leadership qualities, and service to their schools and communities. With this year’s recipients, BU has enrolled 241 Medeiros Scholars, totaling more than $21 million in scholarships. The recipients are (seated, from left) Christina Kratlian, Laura Shea, Amy Medico, Valerie Mascheri, and Katie Benhase; (standing, from left) Jeremy Wolfe, Shawn Murphy, Meghan Maloney, Allison Driscoll, Archbishop Seán O’Malley, President ad interim Aram Chobanian, Patrick Audley, Eric Silver, and Thomas Powers.
